Saint John’s housing plan connects public land, approvals and affordability

Ongoing programme · reviewed September 23, 2026

Reported fact

The City’s Housing Accelerator Fund action plan includes public and underused land, zoning reform, affordable-housing support and electronic permitting. Its published three-year housing-supply target is 1,158 net new residential units through December 2026.

CDMM context · Analysis

These are useful local tools for examining Housing Autonomy: land availability, approval time and affordability can be assessed together. The programme’s target should be tracked separately from completed and occupied homes.

02

New Brunswick · Housing

New Brunswick publishes rental-housing consultation findings

September 16, 2026

Reported fact

The province released findings from 2,852 consultation responses on the Residential Tenancies Act. Affordability, repairs, tenancy termination, dispute timelines and enforcement were among the issues most frequently identified. Further engagement is planned; this release does not itself enact new rules.

CDMM context · Analysis

The findings provide local evidence for Meaningful Community Voice and housing planning. Resident experience can help define practical standards for affordability, maintenance and dispute resolution.

Canada · Cost of living

August inflation holds at 3.0%, with household pressures differing by category

September 14, 2026 · August data

Reported fact

Statistics Canada reports that consumer prices were 3.0% higher than a year earlier in August. Food purchased from stores rose 2.8%, shelter 1.5% and transportation 7.5%. Slower price growth means prices are rising more slowly, rather than necessarily falling.

CDMM context · Analysis

Separate food, housing and transportation measures help communities identify where household budgets are under pressure. Local affordability baselines can inform CDMM analysis without treating national averages as a forecast of local results.

CMHC reports a softer national housing-starts trend in August

September 16, 2026 · August data

Reported fact

CMHC’s six-month trend in housing starts fell 1.3% to an annualized 244,149 units in August. Actual starts in centres of 10,000 or more residents were 17,691, down 2% from August 2025. Annualized rates and actual monthly counts measure different things.

CDMM context · Analysis

Housing Autonomy planning can connect construction capacity, available land and infrastructure readiness. Starts are an early delivery measure; completions, occupancy and affordability remain separate outcomes to follow.

New York City pension trustees commit US$300 million to housing investment

September 17, 2026

Reported fact

The Comptroller and trustees of four public pension funds announced a US$300 million investment with the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust to support housing construction and preservation. This is an investment commitment, not a count of newly completed homes.

CDMM context · Analysis

The announcement offers an international example of examining housing investment and workforce outcomes together. Pension assets remain subject to fiduciary duties and investment requirements; they are not ordinary municipal spending funds.

CDMM context is editorial analysis. Coverage of a programme or institution does not imply its endorsement or adoption of CDMM.
